Set amidst the vast and stunning expanses of the Gobi Desert, The Story of the Weeping Camel follows the adventures of a family of herders who face a crisis when a mother rejects her newborn albino calf.  Exploring an exotic and distant culture in which tradition, myth, and family unity are essential elements, we are allowed a look at a way of life that is all but vanished.

A huge hit at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival, The Story of the Weeping Camel is the Official Mongolian entry for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, and was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2003 European Film Awards.

Variety says:  “the film spins a beguiling web of detail that builds to a surprisingly throat-clutching finish… If Oscar ever invents a category for Best Performance by an Animal, [this camel] should be its first recipient.”
