Three Times
Taiwan, 139 minutes
Director: Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Screenwriter: Hou Hsiao-Hsien & Tien-wen Chu
Cast: Chang Chen, Shu Qi
Drama, in Mandarin & Taiwanese, with English subtitles
Synopsis: From one of the world’s masters of cinema,
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Three Times is a glorious triptych of love stories
set in 1911, 1966 and 2005. Playing the lovers in all three tales, Shu
Qi and Chang Chen seem perfectly pained as their characters cope with
the social limitations particular to each time. Most extraordinary is
the middle story, a largely silent piece set in the same era as Hou's
Flowers of Shanghai and starring Shu as a concubine in love with a freedom
fighter (Chang) who, like all the men throughout the film, is unable
to see the strictures that imprison her.
